Café Transversal III at Pech, Vienna

Javier Carro Temboury, Café Transversal III, 2024, ceramic cups and dishes, coffee leftovers, cast in concrete then sliced; wooden table, sliced " Pech is pleased to present the third cycle of Café Transversal by Javier Carro Temboury. Café Transversal takes place as an itinerant cycle. It was developed firstly in Villa Belleville, Paris in June 2023, and was the subject of an exhibition and a residency in the Palais d’Iena, Paris in November 2023. On March 16th, 2-7pm, a precursory event took place in the form of an on-site café. All works in the show have been produced on site. “Javier Carro Temboury’s first step is research. At flea markets or through random encounters, he starts by collecting ceramic vessels and objects. Questioning their use and utility, bearing the marks of different eras and places, these objects speak, in subtle ways, of the people who held them, touched them, made them, but also of the notion of effort and labour... His sculptures question how we receive and understand the culture of others, and combine a conceptual approach with a sensitivity towards materials.” (Marie Maertens) “Each participant chose a cup, attracted to distinct colors and designs. Days after, the artist sunk this chaotic arrangement of cups, stained by coffee grounds and saliva, into concrete slabs. The resulting aggregated material was then sliced into smaller modules, similar to paving stone. The silhouettes of cups and plates were revealed during the process, reminding us of “terrazzo” technique and activating a sensual union of ceramics and concrete, bone and flesh. (…) By burying and sinking these materials in a yet-to-become stone, Carro Temboury accelerates a process of fossilization. (…) Doing so, he inserts the warm traces of a caffeinated experience into a cold material, as if he executed a taxidermy to our technologies. He encased these leftovers and made them appear as signs trapped into pieces that have as much of a monolithic quality, as documentation, architectural cross-sections or anatomical slices, executed in a measured balance between grain and line, micro and macro (…)” (Lila Torquéo, translated by Javier Carro Temboury) Javier Carro Temboury (Madrid, 1997) is based in Paris since 2015.
